Math problem solving—business pays people to solve problems and to communicate the answers. The more complex the problems, the higher the pay. It is that simple.
To communicate and understand the problem or to apply their solutions, mastery is needed for the following math concepts:
- Accurate math computations (without a calculator)
(+, - , x , ÷ )
- Fractions (+, - , x , ÷ )
- Proportions and Ratios: (e.g., 3 out of 4 which means ¾)
- Decimals (+, - , x , ÷ )
- Understanding place value
(i.e., Tenths .1, Hundredths .01, …)
- Converting decimals to fractions and percentages
- Estimating, Rounding and Averaging
- Measurement
- Usage of different tools (rulers, scales, beakers …)
- Using different scales
(1/16 inch, 1/32 inch, mm, cm … grams, liters)
- Reading graphs, tables and 3D diagrams
- Problem solving
A strong working knowledge of the following math concepts would be helpful:
- Algebra (a few examples)
- Variables – problem solving with missing information
- Mathematical Expressions
- Plotting and reading coordinates
